Patrick M. Rooney, Ph.D., executive associate dean for academic programs for the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IU Indianapolis, has been named the Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy at the school.
“I am pleased to announce Dr. Rooney’s appointment in recognition of his many significant contributions to the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, to the field of philanthropic studies, and to greater understanding of charitable giving,” said Amir Pasic, Ph.D., the Eugene R. Tempel Dean of the school. “The Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy will enable him to expand his highly sought-after research on contemporary philanthropy and offer additional valuable insights.”
Rooney is a professor of economics and philanthropic studies. In addition to becoming the Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy, he will continue in that position and as executive associate dean for academic programs. Rooney previously served as the executive director and first full-time research director for the school’s predecessor, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. He worked closely with the Center’s faculty, members of its Board of Visitors and Indiana University administration to help establish the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the world’s first school of philanthropy.
A nationally recognized expert on philanthropy and charitable giving, Rooney’s expertise includes the relationship between taxes and giving, philanthropy and public policy, and the economics of philanthropy. As its first full-time director of research, Rooney built the Center into one of the nation’s premier philanthropy research organizations, leading research projects for organizations such as Giving USA Foundation, Bank of America, American Express, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, and United Way Worldwide. He helped lead development of the school’s signature research project, the Philanthropy Panel Study (PPS), and led IU’s research on Americans’ giving in response to 9/11, which formed the basis for the school’s leadership in disaster giving. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in economics at the University of Notre Dame.
Rooney succeeds Dwight F. Burlingame, Ph.D., a pioneer of philanthropy as a field of study, who was the first scholar to hold the Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy. Established in 2013, the endowed chair was made possible by the generosity of The Wilbur & Hilda Glenn Family Foundation.

Along with his scholarly accomplishments and accolades in the field of philanthropic research, he possesses genuine dedication to the mission of philanthropy, and I find it gratifying that someone with these attributes has been selected to hold the Glenn Chair,” said Thomas K. Glenn II, a trustee of The Wilbur & Hilda Glenn Family Foundation.
