The Philanthropy Research Workshop (PRW) series, organized by the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, is a public forum for new research on a wide range of philanthropic topics. Scholars from a variety of disciplines present research related to philanthropy, giving, volunteering, civil society, and the nonprofit sector.
The speakers include academics from U.S. universities and around the globe as well as professionals from nonprofit research teams. Some presenters are established leaders in the field while others are emerging scholars and researchers. The research is based on diverse methodological approaches and addresses both scholarly and practical questions of interest.
National and international scholars and students, nonprofit professionals, and the general public are welcome to join the PRW series to engage with presenters and the audience.

The Philanthropy Research Workshop series provides a platform for new and developing research on every possible aspect relating to philanthropy. Workshops allow participants to learn more about topics and research methodologies they may be unfamiliar with. Through this, the workshop is also intended to build a sense of community and shared knowledge around the interdisciplinary fields of philanthropic and nonprofit studies.
The PRW series is hosted live on Zoom on select Tuesdays during the academic year from noon-1 p.m. ET. During the sessions and following the presentations, a Q&A period provides time for attendees to interact with the speaker in a moderated format.
Most workshop recordings are posted in their respective semester series page within a week of the event.
PRW presentations are intended to be accessible and enjoyable for interested parties within and beyond the academic community. The presentations provide a “snapshot” of academic research and describe how and why it was completed as well as its implications for the scholarly and practical field.
Those who attend the sessions can expect to get an “insiders’ view” on the research process—including challenges and opportunities—in addition to the latest findings from current research. Presentations span a wide range of disciplines and research approaches, providing attendees with a special opportunity to hear about a wide range of approaches to studying philanthropy.
Guests with interest in the topics are welcome and encouraged to attend—research experience or expertise are not prerequisites.
