Undergraduate Philanthropic Studies (PHST) majors
Freshman Year
- Be a student – adjust to being in college, begin learning how to balance school/studying, work, and social activities.
- Follow the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy on social media.
- Get to know yourself, your interests, and your passions. Learn about the causes your classmates are passionate about, learn what areas faculty focus on in their research, and explore new volunteer opportunities.
- Stay in touch with your advisor, Pamela Clark, assistant dean for enrollment management and student success. Check in at least once a semester.
- Consider joining student and professional organizations to gain experience, skills, and friends. In the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, contact Pamela Clark to learn more about the Philanthropy Ambassadors Club.
- Document your freshman year in an e-portfolio through your freshman seminar.
- Check out the IU Indianapolis Office of Student Employment, if you need a part-time job.
- Participate in events and workshops hosted by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
- Complete this form to be paired with a professional mentor.
Sophomore Year
- Take PHST-P 390: Internship and Career Preparation.
- Begin researching careers within philanthropic studies and consider conducting informational interviews with alumni and employers.
- Job shadow professionals who are working in your career fields of interest.
- Gain some experience to complement your studies. Consider seeking an internship or part-time work within your fields of interest.
- Visit IU Indianapolis Handshake to review internship or part-time job opportunities.
- Continue documenting your academic and career experiences in an e-portfolio.
- Begin attending events where employers are present, such as student organization meetings and job fairs (on and off campus). Also continue attending events held by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Continue to attend until graduation. Learn to network effectively.
- Continue involvement with student and professional organizations and consider being more than just a member. Volunteer – employers value initiative.
- Create a résumé and cover letter and continually make updates as skills are developed. (But remember you should tailor your resume and cover letter to each position you apply for.)
- Check in with Pamela Clark for advising, at least once a semester.
Junior Year
- Obtain an internship or other type of work experience – paid or volunteer.
- Continue scheduling advising appointments with your advisor, Pamela Clark, to make sure you are on track to graduate.
- Create a LinkedIn profile and begin making meaningful connections.
- Begin to clarify your target areas for career searches. Discuss your ideas with your academic advisor and other faculty members.
- Continue attending events where employers are present to network effectively.

- Continue involvement with student and professional organizations; take a leadership role.
- Gain some experience to complement your studies. Consider part-time work within your fields of interest.
- Continue documenting your academic and career experiences in an e-portfolio.
- Continue to network.
Senior Year
- Continue seeking internships and other work experience. Internships may lead to part-time or full-time employment!
- Clarify your target positions, organizations and geographical preferences for job searching.
- Start seeking full-time employment at least six months prior to graduation. Explore sector-related organizations such as Charitable Advisors.
