The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is saddened by the passing of our former colleague Dr. Warren F. Ilchman.
Between 1993 and 1997, Ilchman served as the second full-time executive director of the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, the predecessor to the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
During his tenure, Ilchman expanded the center’s engagement in international philanthropy, growing opportunities and relationships with philanthropy and academic colleagues in other parts of the world. His interests included expressions of philanthropy in cultures beyond the Western perspective, as reflected in his role as editor of the book Philanthropy in the World’s Traditions (with co-authors Stanley N. Katz and Edward F. Queen), one of more than 15 books he authored, co-authored or edited.
The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s Dickinson-Stone-Ilchman Fellowship for Graduate Education was created by Ilchman and his family to serve doctoral students in honor of Ilchman’s wife, Alice Stone Ilchman; her father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. Donald Stone; her sister, Mrs. Nancy Stone Dickinson; and his brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Dickinson. One doctoral student in philanthropic studies at the school per year earns this fellowship, based on merit.
Ilchman’s career in university administration began as dean at Boston University and culminated as president of Pratt Institute. He taught at Williams College and the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a Fulbright to India. He was educated at Brown University (B.A.) and the University of Cambridge (Ph.D.), where he held a Marshall Scholarship.
Among Ilchman’s leadership positions in philanthropy were serving as Asia Advisor to the Ford Foundation and as founding Director of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans.
