New insights into charitable giving and volunteering to be explored at Science of Philanthropy Initiative conference Sept. 21-22 in Indianapolis

Tuesday, September 20, 2022

Nonprofit leaders, top scholars gather to discuss research findings that can help make a difference, hosted by IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, University of Chicago

Leading philanthropy scholars and nonprofit professionals will come together to explore the latest research on charitable giving and volunteering and how it can be used to make a greater impact for communities and society during the Science of Philanthropy Initiative (SPI) Conference 2022 September 21-22 in Indianapolis.

Conference sessions will discuss topics such as why and how individuals and organizations support the work of nonprofits, ways to make philanthropy more inclusive, and how nonprofits can engage people in helping others.

Participants will hear the latest insights into charitable giving—ranging from tax incentives to giving during disasters and from encouraging repeat giving and to issues of diversity and discrimination —drawn from applied research by top national scholars. Scholars will present the results of research experiments conducted in collaboration with nonprofits, such as testing fundraising theories in the field, as well as experiments done in lab settings.

The 2022 keynote speakers are:
• Cecilia Conrad, Lever for Change and The MacArthur Foundation, “Can Collaborative Philanthropy Reduce the Aspiration Gap?”
• Daniel Hungerman, University of Notre Dame, “The Economics of Financing Congregations and Faith-based Charities” and
• Azim Shariff, The University of British Columbia, “Religion and Prosociality: New Data on Old Questions.”

Identifying new types of information needed to help nonprofit professionals and researchers strengthen the philanthropic sector will be one of the focal points of the conference. “Data Assets and Data Gaps” will be explored by a panel of national experts on charitable giving research, including:
• Jon Bergdoll, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
• Chris Clapp, University of Chicago
• Xiaonan Kou, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
• Ragan Petrie, Texas A&M University
• Woodrow Rosenbaum, With Intent, #GivingTuesday
• Patrick M. Rooney, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (moderator)
