Gifts of Education and Faith to be Topic of Lake Institute on Faith + Giving Lecture March 24th in Indianapolis

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS—Education as a form of philanthropic giving and its role in the quest for faith will be the subject of the eighth annual Thomas H. Lake lecture presented by the Lake Institute on Faith + Giving at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Dr. Richard Gunderman, noted Indiana University professor and physician and author of We Make a Life by What We Give, will explore how education’s shared journey to understanding ourselves and the world is one of the most powerful opportunities to give and to pursue fulfilling lives serving others.

In his remarks, “The Undiminished Flame: Education, Giving and the Quest for Faith,” Gunderman will discuss how intangible gifts such as knowledge and education grow through giving, and how the gift of education shapes our view of the world and the lives we are called to lead.

Gunderman is Professor of Philanthropic Studies, Radiology, Pediatrics, Medical Education, Philosophy and Liberal Arts at Indiana University.

The lecture will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 5:00 p.m., followed by a reception and book signing at 6:00 p.m. Both events will be at the University Place Conference Center + Hotel, 850 W. Michigan Street, on the Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis) campus. The events are free and open to the public, but advance registration is encouraged. Registration is available at https://www.philanthropy.indianapolis.iu.edu/LakeFamilyInstitute/thomas_lake.aspx or by calling 317-278-8955.

Through public discourse, academic research and unique seminars, the Lake Institute on Faith + Giving nurtures conversation and scholarly study around the ways in which faith informs and inspires generosity. The Thomas H. Lake Lecture brings to Indianapolis top scholars working in the fields of religion and philanthropy and has featured, among others, Ingrid Mattson (2010) then-president of the Islamic Society of North America; Elliot Dorff (2009), Jewish legal expert; Paul Schervish (2008), sociologist and philanthropic advisor; and Luke Timothy Johnson (2006), Biblical scholar. Each lecturer produces an original manuscript, which is published by the Lake Institute and available for purchase through its website, https://www.philanthropy.indianapolis.iu.edu/LakeFamilyInstitute/thomas_lake.aspx
