$22,000 Doctoral Fellowship to Study Faith and Philanthropy Awarded to Emory Student

INDIANAPOLIS—The Lake Institute on Faith + Giving, a part of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, has awarded its 2011-2012 Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in the amount of $22,000 to David King, a Ph.D. candidate at Emory University.

King’s research explores the complexity of 20th-century American and global evangelicalism. His dissertation, Seeking a Global Vision: The Evolution of World Vision, Evangelical Missions and American Evangelicalism, traces World Vision’s evolution from a small missionary agency to the world’s largest privately funded Christian humanitarian organization and provides a lens through which to explore shifts within post-World War II American evangelicalism as well as the nature of religious identity within philanthropic organizations.

A native of Anniston, Alabama, King received a bachelor’s degree in history from Samford University in 2001 and earned a Master of Divinity degree at Duke Divinity School in 2004. 

The Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship is a one-year grant given annually that provides a stipend to a scholar whose primary research focus is in the area of religion and philanthropy or faith and giving. It is intended to support the final year of dissertation writing. The first fellowship was awarded in 2008.
