INDIANAPOLIS—Lois Lerner, director of the Internal Revenue Service Exempt Organizations Division, will give a public lecture entitled “Interesting Times” in Indianapolis May 18. Lerner will address the IRS’s role in oversight and outreach to the nonprofit sector, as well as current
challenges faced by tax-exempt organizations in the current economic climate and in meeting increased demands for efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency. The event is presented by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and the Indiana University Foundation.
Lerner oversees approximately 900 employees who are responsible for reviewing applications for tax-exempt status, developing guidance and rulings, conducting compliance activities, and carrying out education and outreach efforts.
Recently, Lerner led the first comprehensive redesign of the Form 990. Tax-exempt organizations use the form to provide key financial and operational information to policy makers, the news media, and the general public, and file it with the IRS each year.
Lerner joined the IRS in 2001 after serving as General Counsel for the Federal Election Commission. She received her undergraduate degree from Northeastern University and her law degree from Western New England College. She is a member of the Massachusetts bar, and past president of the Council on Government Ethics Laws (COGEL).
The lecture will be held Monday May 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis) University Library Lilly Auditorium, Room UL0130, 755 W.
