- Honor the agreed upon work schedule for the internship
- Be punctual and professional in all interactions with the internship host organization and its constituencies
- Register for and complete the coursework in the PHST-P490 Internship in Philanthropic Studies course
- Communicate regularly with the on-site internship supervisor at the organization and the philanthropic studies faculty internship supervisor at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (Pamela Clark)
The internship host organization should agree to provide the following:
- A minimum of 150 hours of supervised work experience (the exact work schedule can be negotiated directly with the student so long as the 150-hour minimum is reached);
- An on-site supervisor, who is a full-time employee of the organization, to assist the student by providing necessary orientation, training, and support;
- Specific projects and/or duties for which the student can take responsibility and ownership;
- A learning plan to guide the internship experience that is developed by both the student and the supervisor to identify the student’s specific professional/learning goals and the specific supporting objectives and activities that will lead to achievement of the goals (a template will be provided and the student will initiate the process of creating the plan);
- A performance evaluation completed by the supervisor at the end the internship (template will be provided).
After sharing the above information with the potential host organization and securing at least an initial interest or commitment to host you as an intern, the student should schedule a 10-15 minute conference call in which the student, the full-time employee who will serve as the on-site internship supervisor, and Ms. Clark, who is the philanthropic studies faculty internship supervisor, will participate.
During this call, Ms. Clark will share important information about university policies and expectations, inquire about the projects and responsibilities the student will have as an intern, and answer any questions about the process.
After successful completion of the conference phone call, (and only after) the student will be authorized to register for the PHST-P490 Internship in Philanthropic Studies course.
