Americans gave an estimated $557.16 billion to U.S. charities in 2023, according to Giving USA 2024: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2023 just released by Giving USA Foundation and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Our school’s experts research and write the report, considered the longest-running report on charitable giving in the U.S. and a “go-to” resource on giving nationwide for fundraisers, nonprofit leaders, donors, scholars, policy makers, journalists, and the public.
In 2023, total U.S. charitable giving grew 1.9% in current dollars, reaching a new high by that measure, but this growth didn’t outpace inflation. Adjusted for inflation, giving declined by 2.1%. Looking ahead, there are some positive signs for giving on the horizon, including that total giving remained above pre-pandemic levels, even when adjusted for inflation. For more information, check out the press release. Two of the lead researchers on the project offer a deeper dive into the data through an article in The Conversation, and a column for Lake Institute on Faith & Giving’s Insights newsletter, on giving to religious congregations in 2023.
