Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy to present “Philanthropy and Hispanics: Building Community and Social Impact through Public Affairs and the Arts”
Luis A. Miranda, Jr., will speak Thurs., Dec. 1 at a virtual event, “Philanthropy and Hispanics: Building Community and Social Impact through Public Affairs and the Arts.” The conversation with Miranda is hosted by the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy, part of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IU Indianapolis. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
Miranda is the founding president of the Hispanic Federation, one of the nation’s leading Latino nonprofit organizations dedicated to addressing the human services and health needs of the Hispanic community. As president, Miranda became one of New York City’s leading voices for increased support to Latino nonprofits.
The father of Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning composer, lyricist, and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, the elder Miranda is an accomplished, well-known strategist and philanthropist. He focuses on a diverse range of issues, particularly those affecting working-class Americans. He has over four decades of experience as a leader in the public, private, political and advocacy sectors, and is a respected partner for corporate and private philanthropy leaders.
For over 40 years, Miranda and his family have championed community activism, developed and solidified Latinx-led organizations, participated on their boards, provided counsel and supported them financially. They have created and supported institutions that serve underserved populations in Upper Manhattan along with communities throughout New York City, in Puerto Rico and across the country.
When his son Lin-Manuel’s artistic work became financially successful, the family, under the elder Miranda’s leadership, reinvested in a pipeline of artists of color to support new voices in the arts. The Miranda family continues to foster the family’s commitment to advocacy for education, the arts and social justice along with a sustained focus on relief and rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico.
Since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, Miranda and his family have partnered with the Hispanic Federation to create the UNIDOS Fund, raising over $46 million for relief and rebuilding efforts. The fund supports community-based organizations that assist with recovery and strengthen resilience. In addition to raising funds, the Mirandas continue to advocate for adequate federal rebuilding funds for the island.
In October 2018, Miranda and his son, Lin-Manuel announced a partnership between the Hispanic Federation, Starbucks, Nespresso, and The Rockefeller Foundation to rebuild Puerto Rico’s coffee sector. In collaboration with Hamilton and the Flamboyan Foundation, the elder Miranda co-created the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which raised $15 million for arts and culture in Puerto Rico to be distributed over a three- to five-year period. Most recently, he has been focused on COVID-19 relief efforts, acting as chair of New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s Northern Manhattan Emergency Recovery Fund for small businesses in the neighborhood, and partnering with the Hispanic Federation to create the HF Emergency Assistance Fund for immigrant-focused community nonprofits.
Currently, Miranda is board chair of Latino Victory, founding board chair of the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and co-founder and advisory board member of the Flamboyan Arts Fund in Puerto Rico. He also sits on the boards of The Public Theater, NYC & Company and the nonprofit newspaper The City. Miranda also chairs the advisory boards to Broadway League’s Viva Broadway Initiative and the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Department at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Miranda earned his B.A. degree from the University of Puerto Rico and pursued graduate work in psychology at New York University. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from Rhode Island College and CUNY Graduate Center.
