Patrick M. Rooney, Ph.D., and Lisa Rooney recently received a 2021 IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy award from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, where he is executive associate dean for academic programs and Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy. The Rooneys were recognized for their tireless service to the school over many years and their gifts of scholarships and fellowships.
“We are honored to receive this award, and even more, we’re grateful for the privilege of joining with our colleagues and friends at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy to help develop and expand its important work,” the Rooneys said.
The couple generously support students’ and philanthropy professionals’ passion to pursue careers in the philanthropic sector and nonprofit organizations while making lasting change in the world. They endowed the Jim and Alice Rooney RISE Scholarship in honor of Dr. Rooney’s parents’ strong commitment to philanthropy and their belief in the value of higher education. Patrick and Lisa Rooney also are contributors to the Timothy L. Seiler Award, the William and Edie Enright Fellowship in Philanthropic Studies and the Eugene R. Tempel Endowed Deanship, ensuring the enduring excellence of the world’s first school of philanthropy which Dr. Rooney helped establish.
Dr. Rooney also is a professor of economics and philanthropic studies at the school. He previously served as the executive director and as the first full-time research director for the school’s predecessor, the Center on Philanthropy. Lisa Rooney worked in public accounting in the healthcare division of a regional firm for two decades prior to starting her own accounting and consulting firm. Rooney and Company currently assists Emergency Medical Services in Indiana in recovering funds to help cover the expenses incurred by the indigent.
“I’m so pleased to congratulate Patrick and Lisa on this special honor, and we thank them for being true stewards of philanthropy and our school,” said Amir Pasic, Ph.D., the Eugene R. Tempel Dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “Patrick and Lisa have been an integral part of the school’s success, and we very much appreciate their many contributions that advance the knowledge and work of our students and faculty.”
Through the Spirit of Philanthropy Award, the IU Indianapolis campus comes together to honor individuals, corporations and foundations that have contributed to its programs through gifts and voluntary service. The recognition is a reminder of how important philanthropy and volunteerism are to the IU Indianapolis campus, community, and civic lives.
