Higher education veteran will help lead institute’s programs and fundraising at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
LaKoya Rochell has been selected to serve as director of programs and associate director of development for the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IU Indianapolis.
The institute fosters a greater understanding of the ways in which underrepresented people are both inspired and informed donors by providing knowledge, education and training. It seeks to understand the perceptions, practices, experiences and needs of the individuals and institutions that operationalize philanthropy in underrepresented communities and develop programming and services to engage philanthropic practitioners, scholars and the public at large in conversations and activities to advance this field.
“We are pleased that LaKoya is bringing her philanthropic energy and entrepreneurial approach to building new possibilities for the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy,” said Dr. Amir Pasic, the Eugene R. Tempel Dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “She has been a valued leader in higher education for many years, demonstrating fundraising prowess and making key contributions to student success, and we look forward to her future accomplishments on behalf of the institute.”
For the past decade, Rochell served in several leadership capacities at Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana. Most recently, she was executive director of resource development at the Anderson, Muncie, Marion and Henry County campuses, raising more than $14.7 million dollars in four years for new facilities, endowments and programmatic needs, as well as student scholarships and resources. She raised funds to build three new Muncie Ivy Tech buildings, two of which are located in downtown Muncie. During her tenure, Rochell previously was assistant director of student success and retention, lead academic advisor and campus office coordinator.
“I am honored to be selected to serve Indiana University in this important role,” Rochell said. “There is a great spirit of philanthropy here at IU Indianapolis, and I look forward to sharing my passion for the mission of the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy with others to cultivate strong relationships and partnerships, and to develop training and research initiatives in this field. It is an honor and privilege to help lead the Mays Family Institute efforts.”
The Institute’s inspiration, William G. Mays, began his nearly 50-year career in Indianapolis and provided outstanding local, national and international leadership in the business, civic and philanthropic sectors. The institute honors the philanthropic values of Bill and his wife, Rose, to provide the community with a space for public inquiry, hands-on training and the study of generosity within historically underrepresented groups.
“LaKoya is a wonderful addition to the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy team,” said Dr. Rose Mays, founder of the institute and member of the school’s board of visitors. “Her experience and skills will enable her to make many valuable contributions to advancing the institute and its future.”
Rochell joins Dr. Una Osili, assistant dean for research and international programs and dean’s fellow, who leads the institute, and Dr. Kim Williams-Pulfer, post-doctoral researcher, on the Mays Family Institute staff.
A native of Anderson, IN, Rochell earned her Master of Arts in Business from Indiana Wesleyan University, with a focus in organizational leadership, and a bachelor’s degree at IU Indianapolis.
