It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our good friend and mentor Don Buttrey.
With wisdom and candor, Don generously shared his insights and good counsel with our school as a volunteer leader for almost 20 years. He was deeply engaged in advising and advancing the work of the school, including as a member of its board of visitors, and was honored as a lifetime member of the board. We are all the better for having known him.
An active philanthropist, Don also served on the advisory board of the school's Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, which he and his late wife, Karen Lake Buttrey, founded in 2002 to honor the legacy of Karen's parents, Tom and Marjorie Lake, to foster a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between faith and giving through research, education and public conversation. Through his service on the institute's advisory board, Don supported the expansion of research and scholarship about faith and philanthropy and helped provide education and training about inspiring a culture of generosity to thousands of congregations, faith leaders, faith-based organizations and students.
We will miss Don's kind heart and joyful spirit, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends.
