Tyrone McKinley Freeman, Ph.D.
Tyrone McKinley Freeman is an award-winning scholar and teacher who serves as Assistant Professor of Philanthropic Studies and Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Prior to becoming a professor, he was a nonprofit professional fundraiser for youth and family social services, community development, and higher education organizations.
He was also Associate Director of The Fund Raising School where he trained professional fundraisers across the United States and in Africa, Asia, and Europe. His scholarly research focuses on African American philanthropy in historical and contemporary contexts, the history of philanthropy, and philanthropy and fundraising in higher education.
His writings have appeared in the International Journal of Educational Advancement, Achieving Excellence in Fundraising, 3rd and 4th Editions, and Advancing Philanthropy. He is co-author of Race, Gender and Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2011. His latest book, Equally Generous and American: The Philanthropic Life of Madam C.J. Walker, is under contract to be published by the University of Illinois Press. He earned a B.A. in English/Liberal Arts from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He holds a Master’s of Urban and Regional Planning from Ball State University, a M.S. in Adult Education from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies from Indiana University.
