Marnie Maxwell
As a nonprofit management consultant, Marnie Maxwell works with nonprofit organizations and boards in the areas of strategic planning, governance, marketing and fund development planning. Higher education, foundations, arts programs, museums, libraries and youth programs are the primary focus areas of her consulting practice, although Maxwell Planning has also worked with many other types of nonprofit and public sector organizations. Marnie also has been a faculty member of The Fund Raising School at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy since 1990, training nonprofit executives throughout the world.
Prior to her work as a consultant, she was Vice President for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, one of the nation’s premier cultural institutions. Her museum experience includes leadership roles in fundraising, marketing, strategic planning and earned income programs.
In order to keep current with how the practices of nonprofit governance and management are applied in “real life,” Marnie serves as a volunteer board member with organizations she cares about. Marnie’s current volunteer work includes serving on the board of the WFYI Foundation and as an emeritus board member of the Indianapolis Art Center. She also serves on the Mission Advisory Board for the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Marnie formerly chaired the boards of the WFYI Foundation, Indianapolis Art Center, Girls, Inc., and the Marion County Commission on Youth. She is a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Indianapolis and has chaired fundraising events for the Eiteljorg Museum and the Heartland Film Festival.
She received both a B.A. in journalism and an MBA from Indiana University. She is a frequent speaker about nonprofit governance and management practices and has written extensively on topics related to the nonprofit sector. Recent publications include “Communicating for Strategic Fundraising,” a chapter in Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (5th edition), published by John Wiley & Sons.
