John Greenhoe, MA, CFRE
John Greenhoe is an internationally recognized fundraising teacher, coach and consultant serving charitable organizations throughout the world. A bestselling author, John’s work has reached across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the South Pacific. His efforts focus on helping nonprofits maximize philanthropic opportunities through thoughtful and intentional cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
John has more than 30 years of nonprofit experience, with more than 20 of them devoted to major and principal gifts fundraising. At his undergraduate alma mater, Western Michigan University, John raised more than $700M for a variety of university initiatives. His signature accomplishment at WMU was leading a campaign to initiate and sustain what is today the U.S.’s largest and most inclusive high education support program for former foster youth.
John is the author of “Opening the Door to Major Gifts: Mastering the Discovery Call” (CharityChannel Press), the first book focused solely on identifying and qualifying prospective major donors. As a result of his research on the topic, John has successfully trained thousands across the globe in the discovery call process.
John is a veteran instructor and trainer, having taught master’s level fundraising courses at three universities. Currently he is a faculty member in the Philanthropy and Development program at his graduate alma mater, Saint Mary’s (Minn.) University. John is also a frequent provider of in-person and virtual workshop programs for numerous associations, with Fundraising Institute Australia, Fundraising Verband Austria, and Fundraising Institute New Zealand among his most recent international clients.
A Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) since 2001, John is committed to volunteerism, having held leadership roles with numerous nonprofits in the Kalamazoo, Mich. community. Among the charities he has served are Habit for Humanity, First Day Shoe Fund, Kalamazoo Public Schools, and Catholic Charities. John also donates time to national/international organizations, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals where has worked to enhance professional development and increase engagement with fundraisers from the world-wide community.
