Genevieve (Gen) Shaker, Ph.D.
Genevieve Shaker is a fundraiser, researcher, author, and educator dedicated to strengthening the fundraising profession and supporting the nonprofit sector. She is Professor of Philanthropic Studies and the Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Before becoming a full-time faculty member, she spent nearly two decades in fundraising, communications, alumni relations, and external affairs for the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts.
Drawing on both professional experience and scholarly research, Dr. Shaker studies fundraising strategy, donor-fundraiser relationships, the fundraising profession, donor-advised funds, and philanthropy in higher education. Her work is recognized for translating research into practical insights that help fundraising professionals strengthen their effectiveness and advance their organizations' missions.
Dr. Shaker is lead editor of Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (5th edition, Wiley), one of the field's most widely used resources for fundraising education and professional development. She is also co-author of Fundraising Principles for Faculty and Academic Leaders, recipient of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy's Skystone Partners Prize for Research.
A longtime faculty member of The Fund Raising School, Dr. Shaker teaches fundraising professionals around the world and is a frequent speaker, webinar presenter, podcast guest, and media commentator on philanthropy and fundraising. She serves on the Association of Fundraising Professionals Research Council and received the organization’s Emerging Scholar Award. An award-winning teacher, researcher, and mentor, Dr. Shaker is committed to strengthening fundraising practice through scholarship, professional education, and service to the field.
