Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is saddened by the passing of Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza, a visionary and compassionate leader, a founding pillar of numerous Muslim institutions in America, and an esteemed council member of the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI).
Dr. Mirza founded and served as President of the Center for Islam in the Contemporary World at Shenandoah University. He was also the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Management Group, Inc. Holding a PhD in physics, Dr. Mirza previously served as General Manager of NAIT (North American Islamic Trust), where he played an essential role in strengthening the financial and institutional infrastructure of the American Muslim community.
His most significant achievement was his trailblazing work in establishing Islamic finance in North America. Recognizing the need for ethical investment options for American Muslims, he co-founded the Amana Mutual Funds in 1984.
As an author and thought leader, Dr. Mirza’s writings and public contributions helped shape an entire generation’s understanding of faith-driven prosperity, leadership, and community-building. His intellectual and institutional legacy will endure for decades to come.
His loss will be deeply felt at MPI. Through his steadfast commitment, thoughtful guidance, and generous support, he helped shape the direction and strength of our institution.
